No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

Taiwanese wood sculptor Yen Chen-wei’s works are characterised by soft and smooth lines inspired by nature, misty colours with both warm and cold tones, and organic texture of woods, faithfully embodying movement and harmony at the same time. Deeply inspired by the wonders of nature, Yen captures the morning sunshine, colourful clouds, gentle breezes, ripples and lakes in his works. Female characteristics, too, are often found on his figures, but they are in fact beyond a specific sex – These figures speak of feelings people accumulate in their lives.

Probably driven by his personal experience, the artist has a unique understanding of the changing nature of life and the passing of time. In his solo exhibition, Elapsing and Dispelling, Yen takes a straightforward approach to face the essence of loss, exploring his own feelings of loss and regret through carving and sculpting. The elapsing of time ended up giving him a sense of relief, so rather than forgetting, he chose to revisit the past to explore his feelings at the time of the events, from which he also created new meanings to move forward and face the future.
