We are pleasant to announce Zito Hsu’s upcoming solo exhibition, ‘Walker × Walker,’ which will be showcased at the TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE Daizhi NOKE store from September 15th to October 31st.
‘Walker’ is a long-running series initiated by artist Zito Hsu during her residency in New York in 2017. This captivating series draws inspiration from the observation of pedestrians’ attire and the constant flow of passersby on the streets. Zito Hsu describes it as, “When people move swiftly, wide pants, skirts, or overcoats create a triangular silhouette, exhibiting a beautiful and balanced dynamic.”
In this latest exhibition, Zito Hsu takes ‘Walker’ beyond the confines of two-dimensional art, presenting it in the form of three-dimensional wooden pieces for the first time. Furthermore, she shifts her focus towards contemporary social culture, expanding from fleeting impressions of moments passed on the streets to the enchantment of social media applications. These moments of connection and interaction between individuals in the digital realm, as their fingertips glide across screens, serve as her new canvas.
As social media becomes an integral part of modern life, each individual possesses an avatar representing themselves and the image they wish to convey. In the exhibition, characters such as the “Apple Person” and the “Blanket Ghost” make appearances. The former seemingly adorns themselves with delectable and endearing filters, hoping to garner affection, while the latter resembles a lurker or a secretive, undiscovered account.
Zito Hsu skillfully and humorously presents these characters with a light-hearted touch, refraining from excessive criticism. She encourages viewers to interpret from different perspectives. Perhaps each character, concealed beneath layers of self-presentation, is in search of their delicate equilibrium. We cordially invite everyone to explore this fascinating exhibition, where concealed identities and their subtle balancing acts await discovery.
